Historical evidence in the Azores shows that the area has generally been inhabited for about 2,000 years before the Portuguese settlers arrived at the area. Despite the possible signs of early inhabitation, the major settlement of the islands began with the arrival of the Portuguese.
A beautiful country with stunning natural features, one of the regions most famous areas is called the Lagoa das Furnas or merely the Furnas. Translated in English to Furnas Crater Lake, it is located in Sao Miguel. A trail leads to the hot springs here where you can still see locals burying a pot for cooking. Located in the easternmost of three active volcanoes on the island, the Furnas has roots dating back 100,000 years. A small town called Furnas is situated on the site and includes a school, a church and a square and dates back to 1661.
